A teenage girl accused of stabbing three horses at a barrel racing competition at South Point Casino in Las Vegas has been ruled competent to stand trial following months of mental health evaluations.

Clark County Family Court Judge Linda Marquis ruled Wednesday that the case could proceed, clearing the way for a December hearing to determine whether the defendant should be prosecuted as an adult.

“I’m ordering that these proceedings move forward,” Marquis said, according to the Las Vegas Review-Journal.

The defendant, who was 17 at the time of the alleged attacks, has been held in juvenile detention since her arrest on May 30.

She faces 12 felony counts of willfully or maliciously killing, maiming, or torturing an animal, and three counts of felony malicious destruction of property.

‘Obsessed Stalker’

The attacks occurred during the National Barrel Horse Association’s Vegas Super Show at South Point’s Arena and Equestrian Center.

Three horses, named Rocket, Sully, and Detail, were stabbed in separate stalls. All survived, although one suffered an injury within a quarter-inch of its jugular vein.

One of the horses’ owners, Arielle Phillips, previously described the suspect as an “obsessed stalker” who had followed her on social media and repeatedly attempted to contact her.

“A crazy obsessed stalker who has been following me on social media for a long time, obsessing over Detail, obsessing over meeting me,” Phillips wrote on Facebook following the attacks.

Phillips said the teenager had approached her twice at the competition, asking unusual questions despite being assigned to a different barn.

She claimed surveillance footage showed the suspect entering Detail’s stall at 12:04 a.m., just two minutes after Phillips had left. Detail was allegedly stabbed multiple times before breaking loose and running through the barn bleeding.

Prosecutors have argued that the separate attacks suggest premeditation.

Adult Prosecution Sought

Clark County District Attorney Steve Wolfson announced in June that his office would seek to transfer the case to adult criminal court, citing the seriousness of the alleged offenses.

He described the allegations as involving “deliberate acts of extreme cruelty against defenseless animals.”

The proceedings were subsequently delayed while the teenager underwent competency evaluations.

At Wednesday’s hearing, defense attorney James Robinson requested that part of the proceedings be closed to protect sensitive information about his client’s mental health and potential rehabilitation.

Marquis excluded reporters from the courtroom for approximately half an hour before announcing her decision.

Robinson, who has previously sought the defendant’s release from custody, declined to comment afterward, the Review-Journal reported.

Defense attorneys have opposed transferring the case to adult court, arguing that the juvenile justice system is better equipped to address rehabilitation and mental health concerns.

The next hearing is scheduled for December 8, when the judge is expected to consider whether the teenager should face prosecution as an adult.
