- The Casino Club at The Greenbrier will continue its operations after the West Virginia Lottery approved a gaming license renewal, following a delay in submitting an audited financial report.
- Officials at the resort attributed the delay in filing to high staff turnover within the finance department, which had endangered the casino’s license renewal.
- Since its launch in 2010, the casino has played a crucial role in maintaining the historic significance of The Greenbrier resort.
The Casino Club at The Greenbrier is set to remain operational as the luxury resort met the requirements of a state audit necessary for its gaming license renewal.

This afternoon, the West Virginia Lottery convened an emergency conference call to review The Greenbrier’s gaming license situation.
“This review is critical to ensure that Greenbrier Hotel Corporation, doing business as The Greenbrier, continues its operations without interruption, thereby safeguarding the financial stability of the State of West Virginia,” stated a notice from the West Virginia Lottery Commission.
During the conference, the commission unanimously approved the renewal of The Greenbrier’s gaming license.
Challenges Due to Staff Transitions
According to West Virginia’s gambling regulations, “historic resort hotels,” such as The Greenbrier, must submit audited financial statements prior to license renewal. The casino’s concession is reviewed and renewed on a five-year cycle.
Following renewal, the West Virginia Lottery Racetrack Act mandates that The Greenbrier pays a fee of $25,000 to the Lottery Commission to cover regulatory expenses.
WV Metro News reported that Steve Ruby, the attorney for The Greenbrier, informed the Lottery Commission last week that the resort faced significant turnover in its finance department. Ruby noted that the casino’s accountants were diligently working to prepare the financial statement ahead of its license expiration on July 1.
The financial report was submitted to the Lottery Commission this week, allowing ample time for the board to review the Casino Club’s financial details and grant its gaming license for the following year.
The Casino’s Role in Preserving the Historic Resort
The Casino Club at The Greenbrier is recognized for its contribution to saving the historic establishment that has welcomed over two dozen US presidents. Coal magnate Jim Justice played a pivotal role in purchasing The Greenbrier from bankruptcy in 2009, and he successfully advocated for a local vote to authorize casino gaming at the venue. The Casino Club commenced operations in July 2010.
Access to the Greenbrier casino is exclusive to overnight guests, event participants, Greenbrier members, and residents of the Legacy or Sporting Clubs. The Casino Club features 160 slot machines, 30 live dealer tables, and includes a FanDuel Sportsbook.
The casino maintains a smoke-free environment and enforces a strict dress code; resort attire is only permitted before 7 pm, while denim and casual wear are prohibited after 7 pm, and gentlemen are required to wear jackets.
Located within The Greenbrier is a decommissioned underground bunker, originally intended as an emergency refuge for the US Congress during the Cold War, which is now accessible through 90-minute tours. Guests can explore the bunker while enjoying slot machines and table games.
