GeoComply, a Vancouver-based company specializing in geolocation compliance for licensed iGaming operators, Know Your Customer (KYC) processes, and fraud prevention, reported that its clients in Alberta conducted over 3.2 million geolocation checks during the initial week of the regulated market.

Anna Sainsbury, the chair and co-founder of GeoComply, indicated that the significant volume of geolocation checks was largely influenced by the World Cup's final week.
Promising Launch Week
The Alberta iGaming market officially opened on July 13, 2026. As of July 22, 2026, a total of 36 iGaming operators had successfully fulfilled their registration requirements with Alberta Gaming, Liquor & Cannabis (AGLC), establishing commercial contracts with Alberta iGaming Corporation (AiGC), and obtained their licenses, with 22 iGaming platforms now operational within the province.
While GeoComply did not specify the exact number of operators in Alberta, they confirmed it to be “more than a dozen.” Geolocation checks are conducted each time a user logs into a platform to place a wager.
World Cup Spurs Engagement
“As a Canadian firm, this initiative is particularly significant for us,” remarked Sainsbury. “Albertans were enthusiastic about accessing more secure and regulated gaming options, and the World Cup finals provided us with immediate insights into market activity.”
“Over 100,000 Albertans registered through platforms powered by GeoComply, connecting with licensed operators from the outset. We take pride in supporting our operators to excel in Alberta.”
Over 100,000 Registrations
The World Cup semifinals occurred on July 14 and 15, 2026, followed by the third-place match between England and France on July 18, 2026, in Miami. The final showdown took place in New Jersey on July 19, 2026, with Spain claiming victory against Argentina with a score of 1-0.
GeoComply's report revealed that the highest activity surges coincided with World Cup match timings, peaking at over 53,000 checks, primarily concentrated in Edmonton and Calgary, during the Spain vs. Argentina final.
The company emphasized that these initial insights do not fully represent the broader Alberta market. They will continue tracking the growth of Alberta's regulated iGaming landscape as it evolves.
