In a recent press statement released by the lottery on Friday, officials identified the winner of the November 29 SuperLotto Plus draw as an individual who purchased the winning ticket at King Wine & Liquor 2 in Sacramento. However, instead of the store’s location, the announcement accidentally included the winner’s personal home address.
Massive Mistake
Though the lottery has since removed the original press release from its website and various social media platforms, a spokesperson confirmed that it was distributed via email to approximately 800 media organizations.
“Safeguarding player privacy and ensuring the accuracy of information are our primary concerns at the California Lottery,” the agency asserted in a subsequent press release. “This has never happened before, and we are reviewing our procedures to prevent this from occurring in the future. In contrast to several states that allow lottery winners to remain anonymous, California’s transparency regulations specify that winners’ names are public records. However, their residential addresses are closely protected, as disclosing them can pose serious safety and privacy threats.
