- Prosecutors aim for life imprisonment after tragic Indiana bar shooting
- Gunman unleashed violence following significant losses at local casino
- Two casualties and three injuries reported in Portside Pub incident
An Indiana man linked to a devastating bar shooting, reportedly triggered by his heavy losses at the Horseshoe Hammond casino, is facing a plea for a lifelong sentence by prosecutors.

Lake County prosecutors have expressed their intention to pursue a life sentence for 32-year-old Caprice Cashaw, who stands accused of murdering bartender Paul Olivares, 25, and patron Lorraine Reyna, 59.
On March 30, 2025, Cashaw allegedly opened fire with a semiautomatic weapon both outside and within the bar after suffering significant financial losses at the casino, totaling several thousand dollars.
Three additional individuals sustained serious injuries in the attack, including Cashaw’s girlfriend, who was shot multiple times yet managed to survive. He is charged with two counts of murder and three counts of attempted murder.
Events Leading Up to the Assault
In the early hours of March 30, Cashaw and his girlfriend left the casino around 3:10 a.m. and began quarreling over money. According to court documents, Cashaw lost a minimum of $7,000 that evening and became physically aggressive while driving.
After parking outside the Portside Pub around 3:30 a.m., Cashaw allegedly continued to assault his girlfriend for approximately six minutes. Upon noticing the disturbance, four individuals, including Olivares and Reyna, stepped outside to lend assistance.
As his girlfriend attempted to flee into the bar, Cashaw fired at her, striking her multiple times and fatally wounding Olivares and Reyna. Witness accounts state Olivares was shot in the head, while Reyna suffered multiple gunshot wounds.
As his girlfriend collapsed at the entrance, Cashaw then aimed his weapon inside the bar, injuring another man multiple times and shooting a woman in the leg as she hid in a walk-in cooler.
‘I Shot Everyone’
Court records reveal that Cashaw later confessed to police that he “shot everyone at the Portside Pub” and was fully aware of his actions during the incident.
The Portside Pub, which has since ceased operations, honored the victims in a heartfelt post on Facebook shortly after the tragedy.
“Paul and Lorrie were remarkable individuals with hearts of gold,” the bar’s owners expressed. “Their kindness touched everyone, and they were always ready to lend a hand to those in need.”
“Lorrie was renowned for her generous spirit and ability to make everyone feel like a friend. Both will be sorely missed, as they taught us valuable lessons about kindness and compassion.”
