- After acquiring Kawhi Leonard from the Clippers, DraftKings significantly reduced the Raptors’ NBA championship odds from +10000 to +2200.
- Noted Hall of Fame oddsmaker Johnny Avello states that this is one of the most considerable single-player adjustments he’s ever encountered in the sportsbook world.
- Sportsbooks promptly responded, resulting in substantial betting traction for Toronto, marking them as a credible contender in the Eastern Conference.
In his extensive career as an oddsmaker, Johnny Avello, Director of Race & Sportsbook Operations at DraftKings, recalls few line adjustments for a single player as momentous as the one following the Toronto Raptors’ acquisition of Kawhi Leonard.

Remarkable Odds Shift
This morning, following the trade with the Los Angeles Clippers, the Raptors’ NBA title odds at DraftKings shifted drastically from +10000 to +2200.
Johnny Avello, inducted into the Sports Betting Hall of Fame in 2021, reflects on four decades in the sportsbook industry, witnessing numerous significant events.
“While trades involving high-profile players don’t always yield success, this one appears promising for Toronto,” he mentioned. “They invested heavily to secure him. He’s looking to finish his career there with a few solid years remaining. The Raptors have previously clinched a championship with him and boast a strong core.”
Raptors: A Defensive Force
Details of the trade reveal Leonard, 35, with one year left on a $50.3 million contract, is expected to sign a two-year extension with the Raptors. He joins Toronto for Brandon Ingram, Gradey Dick, unprotected first-round picks in 2031 and 2033, a first-round pick swap in 2027, and two second-round picks in 2030 and 2033 given to the Clippers.
The impressive roster Avello cites includes Scottie Barnes at power forward, Jakob Poeltl at center, RJ Barrett at shooting guard, and Immanuel Quickley at point guard. Additionally, Collin Murray-Boyles is emerging as a promising talent off the bench, complementing Ja’Kobe Walter.
Leonard returns to the team that brought him an NBA championship in 2019. Despite past injuries, he recorded career-best statistics last season, averaging 27.9 points, 6.4 rebounds, 3.6 assists, and 1.9 steals, with shooting percentages of 50.5% overall and 38.7% from beyond the arc.
Bettor Confidence in Toronto
With Barnes and Murray-Boyles already on the team, the addition of the two-time NBA Defensive Player of the Year solidifies the Raptors as a formidable, defense-oriented squad, posing a significant challenge for any opponent.
Current NBA championship futures at DraftKings show a leading group that includes the Spurs (+270), Thunder (+270), Celtics (+700), and the reigning champion Knicks (+800), while the Raptors occupy the fifth slot at +2200.
“This has been a major adjustment, justifiable because the trade enhances their prospects,” Avello noted. Occasionally, sportsbooks will alter odds without taking any bets, which is precisely what occurred in this instance. Once the Leonard trade was confirmed, DraftKings had to reassess the Raptors’ odds from 100/1.”
“If a savvy bettor encounters a line like 100/1, they’re likely to pounce on it. That’s why it’s crucial to respond swiftly when such significant trades occur. Casual bettors will likely support Toronto as long as the odds remain reasonable, especially given their improved chances to win the Eastern Conference. This year, the Eastern Conference presents a more favorable path to success than the Western.”
Heat Trade Alters the Eastern Conference Landscape
Now, the Raptors hold +800 odds at DraftKings for winning the Eastern Conference, trailing only the Celtics (+260) and Knicks (+320).
At BetMGM, the Raptors’ odds for winning the NBA championship plummeted from +12500 to +2200 after the Leonard trade, with 14% of the total bets now on the Raptors to win it all. Previously, their odds were +3000 for the East; they now stand at +800, capturing 45% of the total bets since the trade.
The Eastern Conference is wide open this year, and Avello pointed out that an intriguing outcome of the Leonard trade has been the effect on Miami Heat futures.
Raptors’ Success Impacts the Heat
Just a week ago (June 23), the Heat made headlines with their own trade, acquiring superstar Giannis Antetokounmpo from the Milwaukee Bucks along with Bobby Portis, in exchange for Tyler Herro, Kel’el Ware, Jaime Jaquez Jr., Kasparas Jakucionis, three first-round picks, a swap in 2030, and a second-round pick in 2033.
BetMGM adjusted the Heat’s championship odds from +3000 to +1800 with 23% of bets (the highest) backing the Heat since the trade. Before the deal, their odds for the Eastern Conference were at +1200; after, they fell to +650, supported by 39% of bets, the most among all teams.
According to DraftKings, the Heat are now listed at +900 for winning the East and +2500 for the championship.
“That’s why traders must stay alert continuously,” Avello emphasized.
Future Speculations: What’s Next for LeBron?
Other intriguing NBA storylines include the speculation surrounding LeBron James’s next move as a free agent and the trade rumors tied to Celtics’ Jaylen Brown, particularly following reports of a proposed trade involving him and Antetokounmpo that ultimately fell through.
DraftKings has launched prop bets related to the potential new teams for Brown and James. The Cavaliers hold the best odds at +100 to sign James, followed by the Warriors at +130. For Brown, the Celtics are favored to retain him at +220, with the Trail Blazers in second at +400.
“The odds for Brown suggest uncertainty about his future with the Celtics,” Avello observed. “As for James, we initially had him going to the Warriors at -240. Today’s landscape has evolved, as we’re factoring in the possibility he could land with the Spurs at +500, which could catapult them into championship contention.”
