The breaking news around midday Friday (July 24) that LeBron James was signing with the Philadelphia 76ers as a free agent triggered a massive, near-instant recalibration across Prediction Markets, with more than $273 million worth of contracts re-priced, one of the fastest shifts in history, as reported in Legal Sports Report.

Just before ESPN’s National Basketball Association (NBA) insider Shams Charania broke the story, in the James next team market the 76ers were trading at $.09 per share on Prediction Markets (implying a roughly 9% probability).

The Miami Heat were the market favorite. Within seconds of the ESPN story breaking, Philadelphia contracts surged to 99%+, while Miami and the other contenders – the Golden State Warriors and Cleveland Cavaliers – collapsed.

Markets React Instantly

Money had started flowing in on the Heat last Tuesday (July 21) after an erroneous YouTube announcement by team staff about a James introductory news conference scheduled for July 27. LSR reported that the Heat’s implied probability jumped from 37% to 49% on Prediction Markets after reports of the YouTube posting. The posting was taken down later on July 21.

The New York Post reported that a few speculators cashed in big on Friday – computer programmers cashing in on the speed of trades. When the news broke, accounts instantly swarmed in with wagers on an outcome that had already been announced; the instant trades were triggered by ESPN news services.

Big Winners Emerge

One account cashed in huge, the Post reported – a massive purchase of 26,381.33 contracts at that $.09-per-contract price, meaning a profit of $24,007.01 in a matter of seconds after the market readjusted.

Still, what happened Friday showed that Prediction Markets had no advance read on James’ decision, with no insider information tipping the market one way or the other.

The next NBA story to watch on the Prediction Market front is Kawhi Leonard’s next team.

Kawhi Market Awaits

On June 30, news broke that the Toronto Raptors had acquired Leonard in a trade with the Los Angeles Clippers. Leonard led the Raptors to an NBA title in 2019. Leonard left as a free agent in 2019 to sign with the Clippers.

In return, the Raptors would send Brandon Ingram, Gradey Dick, two unprotected first-round draft picks, a pick swap, and two second-round picks back to the Clippers.

However, the Raptors have paused the trade as the NBA waits for a report from an independent law firm looking into Leonard’s contract with the Clippers, with media reports swirling that the salary cap may have been circumvented, with possible penalties imposed on both Leonard and the Clippers.

Next Prediction Catalyst

Media insiders still expect the trade to go through, though. NBA Commissioner Adam Silver was asked about the anticipated timing of the Leonard decision at a news conference on July 14 during the NBA’s Summer League.

“My timeline remains this summer,” said Silver. “We all have an interest in wrapping this up. The investigation needs to run its course.”

Still, anything can happen.

This morning (July 24), the Toronto Raptors are trading at 86.5 cents on Polymarket, implying roughly an 87% chance the Raptors acquire him. Like with the James signing, the prediction market jump will be dramatic once news breaks on the contract investigation.
