  • The company emphasizes that online casino gambling remains prohibited in Japan, and any site marketing online gaming linked to MGM Osaka is not officially recognized by the resort.
  • The MGM Osaka integrated resort, valued at $7.85 billion, is currently under construction on Yumeshima Island.

MGM Osaka Corporation is cautioning the public in Japan about fraudulent sites masquerading as the upcoming integrated resort on Yumeshima Island and asserting that online casino gambling is now lawful and accessible nationwide.

MGM Osaka has recently issued a statement encouraging the public to remain vigilant against counterfeit websites promoting unauthorized online gambling using the casino’s branding.

We have verified the presence of unauthorized websites using the MGM Osaka Corporation name. These platforms have no affiliation with our company and are not managed by us,” the statement read.

MGM Osaka asserts that its legitimate website is mgmosaka.co.jp. In Japan, online casino gambling is illegal, including advertising or promoting such activities.

MGM Osaka is a collaborative venture between MGM Resorts International, based in Las Vegas, and Orix Corporation, a financial entity in Japan. Both companies own a 43.5% stake, while the remaining shares are held by a consortium of 22 entities, including Panasonic, Kansai Electric, and West Japan Railway.

Marketing of Offshore Casinos

The fraudulent websites posing as MGM Osaka and promoting unauthorized iGaming to users in Japan via social media and various online platforms are likely operated from overseas. These offshore casinos acquire interactive gambling licenses from small island nations and then target customers from large markets like Japan and China.

Engagement with such websites in Japan is deemed a criminal offense, albeit one that is infrequently prosecuted. However, individuals who participate in offshore casinos face risks beyond mere betting, as these platforms often operate with minimal regulation regarding fair play and data protection.

“Should you fall victim to fraud or spot any suspicious activity, please reach out to your local law enforcement or relevant authorities right away,” MGM Osaka advised consumers who may have unknowingly engaged with unauthorized online platforms.

Prominent offshore casino jurisdictions include Curaçao, Malta, Panama, Anjouan, and Costa Rica.

MGM Osaka Overview

MGM Osaka, currently the only casino approved in Japan, is set to open in the fall of 2030. The integrated resort, with an investment of ¥1.27 trillion (approximately US$7.85 billion), will span more than 120 acres on the artificial Yumeshima Island.

The envisioned complex will feature around 2,500 hotel rooms, extensive facilities for meetings, incentives, conventions, and exhibitions (MICE), a large retail shopping area, waterfront attractions, a public park, and multiple public transport options connecting to the broader Kansai region.

Regarding the casino itself, the latest plans include more than 6,000 slot machines and almost 500 live dealer table games.

MGM Osaka will initially hold a monopoly on casino operations in Japan, although the country anticipates a second bidding round in the coming years. Japan’s 2018 gaming legislation permits up to three integrated resort casinos.
