The Republican Party’s third presidential debate saw former US Ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley and Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis emerge as the top winners amongst political bettors.
The debate featured lively exchanges, notably between Haley and entrepreneur Vivek Ramaswamy, during which Haley’s odds of securing the presidential nomination received a slight boost.
An hour-long debate highlighted Haley’s strong presence in foreign policy and a powerful response on abortion, significantly contributing to her improved performance.
Following the debate, Haley’s stock on the PredictIt exchange climbed two pennies to 15 cents, while DeSantis’ shares increased to 11 cents.
Trump Maintains Momentum
Although former President Donald Trump did not partake in the debate, he remains a favorite in betting markets for the GOP ticket. At PredictIt, his shares currently trade at 71 cents.
At William Hill, Trump is the heavy favorite to represent the Republican Party in the 2024 presidential election, with implied odds of 83%..
DeSantis believes that the charges facing Trump have placed him back in the spotlight, energizing his base and potentially providing an opportunity for him to secure the Republican electorate.
DeSantis sees himself as the prime candidate to appeal to the 50% of conservative voters who are open to alternatives, potentially bridging the gap between the 25% that solidly support Trump and the 25% that have moved on.
