- Tribal nations typically provide lower fuel prices due to their exemption from state tax on gasoline and diesel
- Currently, fuel prices are approximately $1 higher than they were last year
- Certain tribes are merging fuel services with gaming, creating hybrid gasinos
Casino.org is introducing a new term: gasinos, which are gas stations that feature slot machines and/or table games, primarily located on tribal lands.

The ongoing conflict between the United States and Iran is causing significant disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz, a critical passage for oil transportation, which has led to a notable increase in gas prices. As reported by AAA, on April 13, the national average price for a gallon of regular gas is $4.12, compared to $3.18 a year ago.
Due to elevated state taxes, fuel prices are significantly higher along the West Coast, with Washington at $5.39, Oregon at $4.98, and California at $5.89.
Tribal nations are benefiting from this scenario, as sovereign entities that are exempt from state fuel taxes can sell gasoline and diesel at much lower prices. Some Native American tribes are leveraging these cheaper rates to attract visitors to their tribal resorts, casinos, and gasinos.
Fuel Prices on Tribal Lands
As sovereign governments, tribes that sell fuel must pay federal taxes of 18.4 cents per gallon for gasoline and 24.3 cents per gallon for diesel, similar to what commercial establishments pay. However, they are exempt from state taxes on fuel transactions.
California has the highest state gas tax, approximately 71 cents per gallon. Washington ranks third at 59 cents, while Oregon is 12th with a rate of 40 cents.
Numerous tribes in these three states are maximizing their federal Indian gaming rights while also taking advantage of their exemption from state fuel taxes. These gas stations, often labeled “trading posts,” are frequently found on tribal lands adjacent to their casinos. Some tribes have ventured into combining fuel services with gaming, creating gasinos.
For instance, California’s Bear River Pump and Play, located near the Bear River Casino Resort in hinterlands of Humboldt County, offers regular gas today at $5.97 a gallon, which is roughly 20 cents less than local prices. The establishment features around thirty slot machines for patrons.
At the Morongo Travel Center in Cabazon, which houses about 40 slot machines offering jackpots of up to $5,000, regular gas is priced at just $5.10. In nearby Palm Springs, consumers face prices exceeding $6 per gallon.
As the gasinos in California operate without alcohol sales, participants aged 18 and older are permitted entry. In contrast, tribal casinos that serve alcohol typically have a minimum age of 21 for entry.
Gasinos are not exclusive to California; for example, in Florida, the Miccosukee Tribe runs the Little Trail Casino along Interstate 75, commonly known as Alligator Alley, set in the Everglades. This Class II tribal casino features around 150 electronic bingo machines and includes a bar.
Across the United States, approximately 500 gas stations are owned by tribal nations.
Trump’s Caution
Former President Donald Trump has consistently asserted that the conflict with Iran will reach a resolution soon. However, on Sunday, he acknowledged that consumers will likely continue experiencing high gas prices leading up to the 2026 midterm elections.
“Prices may stay the same or even see a slight increase, but they should remain roughly around this level,” Trump stated during an interview on Fox News with host Maria Bartiromo on “Sunday Morning Futures.”
