Survey: New Yorkers Doubt the Benefits of Online Sports Betting

A recent survey conducted by Siena University in Upstate New York reveals that a significant portion of the populace believes that the state’s decision to legalize online sports betting was a misstep.

The Siena Research Institute surveyed 814 residents of New York from July 1-8, 2026, to assess their views on the state’s regulated sports betting landscape. Findings indicate that fewer than 25% (23%) believe online sports wagering is advantageous for New York.

Predictably, individuals who actively participate in sports betting viewed it more favorably, with 49% considering it a positive development for the state. In contrast, only 14% of non-bettors and 16% of individuals over 50 expressed positive feelings towards online sports gambling.

“A generational divide is evident among those who engage in and support sports betting,” stated Travis Brodbeck, Associate Director of Data Management at Siena University. “Many younger New Yorkers not only place their own bets but also perceive the issues associated with sports betting differently than older demographics.”

Diverse Opinions

New York swiftly emerged as the leading state in sports betting revenue upon its launch.

During the fiscal year 2025/2026, which concluded in March, gamblers wagered over $26.1 billion online on sports, with sportsbooks retaining nearly $2.6 billion of that amount. The revenue generated from sports betting has yielded more than $1.3 billion in state taxes, funding public education initiatives.

While it’s evident that sports betting in New York is positively impacting schools, numerous residents remain opposed to allowing the industry to promote its gambling services during live sporting events on television.

The Siena University Poll inquired whether respondents agreed strongly or somewhat that online sportsbooks should be prohibited from advertising during televised sports events. Approximately 43% of the general population agreed, alongside 36% of sports bettors. Support for an advertising ban was also noted among 45% of non-bettors and 50% of those aged 50 and over.

Despite this, the majority of participants did not express significant concern regarding the visibility of these commercials or commentary during live games.

“Most bettors are largely unfazed by television advertisements for online sportsbooks and show minimal concern about live-game betting discussions,” Brodbeck stated.

Growth of NY Sports Betting Amid Concerns

In spite of concerns surrounding sports prediction markets, New York’s online sportsbooks continue to experience growth.

The $26.1 billion in wagers during the 2025/2026 fiscal year reflects a 9.25% increase from the previous year. Additionally, gross sports revenue from online platforms soared by 21.2%.

The New York State Gaming Commission, along with Attorney General Letitia James, has urged consumers to exercise caution regarding participation in sports prediction market trades, citing the platforms’ inadequate responsible gaming measures, loose regulations, and the absence of state tax contributions or licensing fees.
