The Rio is transforming its dinner-theater lineup by bidding farewell to one of the longest-running interactive shows in Las Vegas, only to welcome back an even more iconic performance. Marriage Can Be Murder, a comedic whodunit that entertained audiences for over 25 years through various venues, concluded its run at the Rio on Sunday, July 12. This closure paves the way for the much-anticipated return of Tony n’ Tina’s Wedding, a lively Italian-American wedding parody that once attracted audiences of up to 1,000 per performance when it was staged at the Rio in a massive tent from 2000 through at least 2006.
The dinner-show area at the Rio, now revamped as The Venue, is temporarily dark for a complete renovation ahead of the show’s return on August 13. Producer John Bentham of Ivory Star Productions informed the Las Vegas Review-Journal that the space is being redesigned into two separate showrooms to accommodate a rotating array of culinary-centric entertainment.
In addition to Tony n’ Tina’s, the Faaabulous drag brunch will make a comeback in mid-August, introducing a new noon seating on weekends. Furthermore, there are plans for year-round themed experiences, unique menus, live music events, and immersive pop-up attractions to entice visitors, even during off-show times.
A Brief History of Tony n’ Tina’s
Tony n’ Tina’s Wedding boasts a rich and varied history in Las Vegas. After a four-year stint at the Rio as one of 100 international spin-offs of a successful New York City dinner show that debuted in 1988, this performance moved to Planet Hollywood and then Bally’s (now Horseshoe Las Vegas) — first in the Windows showroom and later inside Buca di Beppo from 2016 to 2018.
Tony n’ Tina’s is renowned for its immersive audience interaction, where a trip to the restroom might involve a chat with Tina’s Uncle Luigi about the couple’s chances of staying together due to Tony’s infidelities.
For the revival, the production has been reimagined, with the onstage wedding of Tony and Tina now fully enacted rather than merely suggested. Val Witherspoon takes the reins as the resident director.
The End of Marriage
The conclusion of Marriage Can Be Murder marks the end of a unique chapter in Las Vegas entertainment. Created by Eric and Jayne Post, this interactive murder-mystery first opened at the Showboat (later known as Castaways) in 1999 and has journeyed through venues like The Cracked Egg, Four Queens, Fitzgerald’s/D Las Vegas, and the Orleans.
However, the Rio did not significantly contribute to the show’s Vegas longevity, as it hosted the production for only 11 months.
As for the closure reasons, shows typically end in Las Vegas due to dwindling ticket sales or controversies, but there are no scandals linked to Marriage Can Be Murder. The production is currently on the lookout for a new venue.
Even if it doesn’t secure another space, 27 years is a remarkable run for any show in today’s entertainment landscape.
