Two Casinos in Maine Close Doors Following Nearby Mass Shooting

Following a tragic mass shooting that claimed the lives of 18 people, both of Maine’s gaming properties have temporarily closed. The Oxford Casino Hotel, located approximately 14 miles from the crime scenes in Lewiston, Maine, and the Hollywood Casino Hotel & Raceway Bangor, which is 106 miles away, have suspended operations. It is currently unknown when the casinos will reopen. In a statement, the Oxford gaming property expressed its closure was due to an abundance of caution for the safety of its employees and guests, while also offering thoughts and prayers to those affected. The Bangor casino also extended condolences and hoped for a swift resolution to the situation. It is worth noting that there is no evidence suggesting the suspect, Robert Card, was near either gaming property. Several other businesses in Maine, including L.L. Bean and numerous schools, were also closed or experienced delayed openings on Thursday. Maine Governor Janet Mills provided an update, confirming the shooting claimed 18 lives and left 13 others injured. The shootings occurred at Sparetime Recreation, a bowling alley, and Schemengees Bar and Grill, a bar located four miles from the bowling alley. The community expressed its grief on social media, with Schemengees Bar and Grill posting a heartfelt message. A manhunt for the suspect is underway, and an arrest warrant has been issued for Card on eight counts of murder. Police believe he may be armed with an AR-15-style rifle and consider him to be dangerous. Law enforcement has urged residents to stay indoors, lock their doors, and report any suspicious activity. Reports have also emerged indicating Card is a certified firearms instructor and a member of the US Army Reserve. He allegedly made threats against a National Guard facility in Saco and is suspected of having mental health issues. Local, state, and federal officials, including the FBI, are collaborating on the investigation, and updates will be provided as the story develops. This article was originally published on
