According to a website named gamblingsites.org, “Unsightly carpets are the outcome of extensive market analysis. These flamboyant carpets featuring unconventional lines and curves actually help keep gamblers alert and concentrating on their gameplay.”

The abundance of misconceptions surrounding casinos, beyond the general neglect for accuracy by online gaming sites, traces back to basic psychology. Gamblers are acutely aware that every casino game is structured to take more money from them than it returns. Consequently, the mind often formulates “strategies” to overcome this perceived “deception,” applying this reasoning to every aspect of the casino environment.
A key myth that this series has debunked is the idea that casinos inject additional oxygen into their establishments.
But we’re still exploring various theories about casino carpets…
“The carpets are designed to confuse you and make exits harder to locate,” asserts Reddit user LordPraetorian in the r/LasVegas subreddit.
Disagreeing with this notion, Redditor “oftcenter” contends, “The intricate designs on the carpets are meant to draw your gaze upwards, while the relatively simple ceilings are crafted to bring your attention down. Together, these tactics ensure your focus remains on the gaming options ahead.”
“These theories are ridiculous,” argues Scott Roeben of Casino.org’s popular blog, Vital Vegas. “Not once has any casino executive, manager, or operator I’ve chatted with ever suggested creating unattractive carpets to keep patrons awake, bewildered, or looking upward instead of downward.”
The Real Story

The vibrant patterns commonly seen in casino carpets serve a simple purpose: to mask stains and wear. While these carpets are maintained regularly, sometimes multiple times a day, it’s an impossible task to keep them pristine. Additionally, due to profit margins being crucial for public companies, many delay carpet replacements as long as possible.
“Casinos differ from most businesses, as they experience a constant influx of thousands of patrons daily, many of whom are carrying beverages,” explains Roeben. “This leads to frequent and varied spills, especially colorful slushy drinks.”
“And let’s not forget about the vomit.”
Roeben is well-acquainted with casino carpets. Few individuals in Las Vegas have witnessed the degradation of as many carpets as he has. He is passionately engaged in the topic, often discussing it with casino executives and eagerly sharing photos of updates on social media whenever he learns of a new carpet installation. He currently favors the new flooring at Fremont Hotel & Casino in downtown Las Vegas.
“I initially thought people wouldn’t appreciate it due to its chaotic shapes and vibrant colors, but they absolutely love it,” Roeben says. “The entire gaming floor is undergoing renovations with these exciting patterns, one section at a time. Patrons seem to cherish the elaborate designs often seen in casino carpets.”

An Additional Function
According to Roeben, casino carpets serve yet another function that isn’t based on any trickery.
“They also enhance a casino’s brand image,” Roeben elaborates, “acting as a defining feature of that brand. This is the reason you won’t encounter similar carpets across different casinos.”
For example, the carpet at the Horseshoe (now rebranded as Bally’s) features actual horseshoes in its design.
“That’s the only instance I can think of that’s so overt,” Roeben remarks. “In most cases, however, the patterns are tailored uniquely to that particular casino, often so recognizable that many can identify a casino solely by its carpet.”
This type of brand recognition isn’t always advantageous for a casino. For instance, law enforcement may occasionally release crime scene photos to the media while refraining from disclosing where the incident took place, out of courtesy to the casino.
“They might display a close-up of the scene with yellow tape on the carpet,” Roeben explains. “And immediately, people on social media can pinpoint the casino and make it known.”
“Carpet enthusiasts are like the forensic experts of carpeting.”
