The New Jersey State Athletic Control Board (SACB) has recently updated its sports betting policy to prohibit individuals participating in combat sports from wagering on boxing, wrestling, MMA, UFC, kickboxing, and other combat sports events.
In response to the Jake Paul vs. Mike Tyson boxing match, which raised suspicions of a fixed outcome, the SACB has revised its sports betting policy to maintain the integrity of combat sports and ensure the safety of participants.
The agency released an updated Sports Betting Policy, outlining the restrictions on betting for combat sports participants, promoters, and officials, both within New Jersey and globally.
According to the policy, individuals involved in combat sports are prohibited from betting on such events but are allowed to wager on non-combat sports after registering with the New Jersey Division of Gaming Enforcement (NJDGE).
Combat Sports Regulations
While there is no concrete evidence of foul play in the Tyson-Paul fight, the match’s outcome raised suspicions among viewers.
Tyson appeared to struggle against a much younger opponent, leading to questions about the authenticity of the fight. Despite speculations, no formal agreements were made regarding the outcome of the match.
SACB Commissioner Larry Hazzard Sr. emphasized the agency’s commitment to preventing any unethical behavior in combat sports events in New Jersey.
By implementing these standards, we are safeguarding the integrity of combative sports events,” said Hazzard. “We are sending a clear message that unethical behavior will not be tolerated in New Jersey’s combative sports industry.
The updated policy requires all individuals under SACB’s jurisdiction to report any suspected violations of the sports betting rules promptly. Failure to comply may result in fines, license suspensions, or revocations.
Denial of Allegations
Compared to team sports, fixing an individual sport like combat sports presents different challenges, making it harder to manipulate outcomes. Speculations regarding Tyson’s performance in the fight circulated on social media, prompting responses from the involved parties.
Addressing the controversies, one of the fighters clarified that the perceived difference in performance was due to his skill and tactics during the match.
The fighter stated, “People misunderstood the dynamics of the fight and failed to acknowledge my strategy, leading to assumptions of foul play.”
