DraftKings Sportsbook Debuts in Alberta on Opening Day

This morning, DraftKings announced its plans to unveil its online sportsbook and casino platform in Alberta, coinciding with the market’s launch on Monday, July 13. Alongside this, it is also reintroducing its Golden Nugget Online Gaming brand.

Launching successfully on Day 1 is essential for customer acquisition, especially with the significant excitement surrounding the World Cup and the unprecedented betting activity reported by sportsbooks throughout the continent, remarked Greg Karamitis, DraftKings’ Executive Vice President and General Manager of Sports.

Importance of Day 1

“Each sports moment creates a desire for engagement on our platform, making it crucial for us to be present,” he stated.

Ahead of the launch, DraftKings will host a watch party on Saturday, July 11, at the Wildhorse Saloon in Calgary, as part of a series of World Cup watch events previously held in cities like Los Angeles, Dallas, Miami, and Hoboken. This Saturday is particularly exciting, featuring quarter-final matches like Norway against England and Argentina against Switzerland.

The semi-finals of the World Cup begin on Tuesday, July 14, when Albertans can start placing bets on regulated platforms.

“Despite Canada's elimination from the tournament, the enthusiasm is palpable. Missing these chances to offer a great experience in thrilling sports moments would be a regret for us,” he explained.

“We aim to be among the first options available to users, demonstrating our quality, especially compared to competitors. We believe that when customers try out different offerings, they typically return to us due to our superior quality. We anticipate high demand in this timeframe.”

World Cup Sparks Interest

This morning, the Alberta Gaming, Liquor and Cannabis (AGLC) reported that 49 operators have completed their registration and fee payments successfully.

These companies must finalize the dual-step process with Alberta iGaming Corporation (AIGC) to be prepared for the launch on Monday.

In a similar fashion, FanDuel revealed yesterday, July 8, that it too will go live on Monday.

Lessons from Ontario

In a recent discussion with Casino.org, Karamitis emphasized that distinguishing DraftKings from other operators in Alberta's competitive market will require a deep understanding of the local sports environment.

This was a key takeaway they learned from their launch in Ontario in 2022, particularly as they missed opportunities to connect with local sports offerings like the Toronto Maple Leafs during their initial phase.

“Thus, in every market, we intend to ensure a sports offering that is genuinely authentic and top-notch,” he shared.

Connecting with Alberta's Sports Culture

Karamitis noted Alberta's robust sports culture, highlighting the significant investments DraftKings has made in its sports betting product, particularly for hockey.

He specifically mentioned the Edmonton Oilers, discussing how, despite the team's injuries and early playoff exit last season, they are still a force to be reckoned with, especially under the leadership of Connor McDavid.

This passion for local teams will inform DraftKings' offerings in the market, as well as a focus on the Canadian Football League (CFL), with teams in Edmonton and Calgary taking center stage in western Canada.

Live Betting Innovation

“Gaining the respect of customers in this region is crucial,” Karamitis asserted.

With Alberta being the second Canadian province and the 34th jurisdiction in North America to host DraftKings Sportsbook, this launches alongside its established casino offerings available across various U.S. states.

While Alberta's licensed operators cannot promote bonuses or incentives, once a user registers with DraftKings, the goal is to keep them engaged by providing real-time game updates and insights.

Enhancing Customer Experience

Karamitis recounted a thrilling moment from the round of 16 matchup between Argentina and Egypt on Tuesday, July 7, which Argentina won 3-2 thanks to a last-minute goal from Lionel Messi after being down 2-0.

“That game was exhilarating, and sports enthusiasts understand that,” he remarked. “We need to offer dynamic betting options rather than just standard moneylines. We must reflect the shifting momentum of the game in real-time.”

Future Growth Beyond Alberta

Real-time text alerts sent to bettors' phones during major sporting events, allowing dynamic updates on site offerings, will set sportsbook operators apart in Alberta, Karamitis explained. This also necessitates quick adjustments to betting markets, as well as social features that build a sense of community among users.

“There's nothing more frustrating than wanting to place a bet but finding the app markets frozen,” he lamented.

With ongoing discussions in Canada about which province will be next to follow Ontario and Alberta in opening its igaming market to private operators, Karamitis emphasized a careful, step-by-step approach.

“We will consistently monitor emerging regulations and new territories and states, aiming to expand our footprint along the way,” he concluded.
