If you’re a Powerball participant in New York, it may be prudent to re-examine your previous tickets.

The New York Lottery is urging Powerball players to check their ticket stubs as there is currently an unclaimed $1 million prize. According to state lottery representatives, this winning ticket was drawn during the Powerball event on August 6, 2025.
The fortunate ticket was purchased at Diamond News, a bodega located at 631 2nd Avenue, New York, NY, 10016. This establishment is situated between East 34th and 35th streets in Manhattan’s Murray Hill area.
In New York, lottery tickets must be claimed within a year of the drawing. Therefore, the holder of the $1 million Powerball ticket needs to step forward by Thursday, August 6, 2026, at the latest.
Details of the Winning Powerball Ticket
The numbers drawn during the Powerball event on August 6, 2025, included 15, 27, 43, 45, and 53, with the red Powerball designated as 9. This winning ticket matched all five white balls but did not match the Powerball.
This New York win was one of four tickets that matched all five white balls during the August 6, 2025, drawing. The other three tickets have already been claimed. None of the tickets included the $1 Power Play add-on, which would have doubled their payouts to $2 million.
The Lottery recommends that the person holding the winning ticket: Sign the reverse side, store it securely, and reach out to the New York Lottery at 518-388-3370 or visit www.nylottery.ny.gov for guidance on claiming their prize.”
New York Lottery
New York boasts the nation’s largest and most lucrative lottery, contributing $3.65 billion in the fiscal year 2025-2026 to benefit public education across the state.
Each year, millions of winning lottery tickets go unclaimed, though the majority only yield small prizes. Often, tickets are mistakenly discarded as losers or simply lost.
The largest unclaimed lottery reward in U.S. history occurred in 2011.
Despite alerts from the Georgia Lottery, a ticket sold at a Pilot Travel Center in Tallapoosa for the June 29, 2011, draw expired unclaimed. The ticket was valued at $77 million.
$1 Million Isn’t What It Once Was
If the holder of the $1 million Powerball ticket in New York comes forward, they will be subject to both federal and state taxes on their earnings. The initial $1 million prize would face a 37% federal tax and a 10.9% state tax from New York.
This means approximately $370,000 would go to federal taxes, and New York would claim $109,000, leaving a net amount of roughly $521,000. Additionally, if the winner resides in New York City, local taxes of 3.876% would apply, about $38,760, bringing the final payout down to below $482,240.
